The actual thing, and not just theidea of.Helpless as we all tend to be, as we all need to be.The grass grows tall in the summer time, tall enoughto hide you while you lay back in her arms, andempty your worry into her loving embrace. And you cry, no longer because sadness gripsabout your wrists, but because the burden is upand into the breeze, and onto the next carrier, the next recipient. And you do not fear it anymore, the loneliness and the pain, the worry and the sorrow. For the summer can hold you and can hide you inher tall grass. And when winter comes, and the morning cold bitesat your face as you make your way, you can feelit creeping back again. And you are alone. And thereis no warm nest for you to return to, to release into. The bare armed trees creek and moan against abird-less sky, and reminds you that you have no refuge.Independence. The actual thing, and not just the ideaof. You long for summer, but you do not need her. Andthough she will be back again, you must spendthe cold, harsh winter bunkered in, gin-soaked andmumbling. For it is you who stands each day fromthe warmth of your bed to walk out into her cold clutches. And it is you who chooses life over death. And so when that bright sun comes flooding back inthrough your window pane and warms your cheek as yousleep, remember that most things are temporary:Peace, solace, company, and happiness. But there is only one thing that is sustainable in thislife of fear and love, pain and joy:Independence. The actual thing, and not just the ideaof.
